All of Kodansha USA's 2023 New Series and One-shot Releases

Updated: Dec 9, 2023

*This list does not count artbooks or boxsets, and does not recount series that were released in digital first before 2023 then printed later. It does count new editions (omnibus, hardcovers, etc).

Kodansha USA's 2023 Shoujo & Josei New Releases

  • This month, Magic Knight Rayearth receives a smaller, more affordable version of the new translations and lettering present in the 25th-anniversary hardback editions Kodansha released in 2019 and 2020. This is similar to what they did for the large Sailor Moon Eternal Edition manga versus the smaller volumes known as the Sailor Moon Naoko Takeuchi Collection series.

  • The series No. 6 was published in a new extra-large omnibus edition format starting in January this year. The single volume editions were previously released starting in 2013.

  • Life was previously published by Tokyopop back in 2006, but was canceled nine volumes into the 20 volume series. This year, Kodansha decided to release it as a digital-only series from the beginning. The release pace has been pretty rapid, with about one new volume released per month. Kodansha also licensed Life's seinen sequel Life 2: Giver/Taker this year.

  • Nina the Starry Bride and A Condition Called Love were both printed for the first time this year, but they've been out digitally before that. I didn't count them because they're not "new." These both turned out to be expected choices for a print release this year, as they now both have anime adaptations announced for 2024!

Kodansha USA's 2023 Shonen & Seinen New Releases

  • Cells at Work! received a new omnibus edition this year. The single volume editions were originally released in 2016 and 2017, with a more recent volume six came out in 2021.

  • Prophecy: Complete Omnibus Edition released in June of this year. It was previously released under Vertical Comics in 2014 and 2015 as single volumes.

  • A Girl on the Shore was given a hardcover collector's edition this year. The previous edition released in 2016.

  • Yet another Cells at Work! spin-off was licensed: Cells at Work! Lady.

  • Ghost in the Shell got a new and exclusive cover on a massive hardcover collector's edition this year in Ghost in the Shell: Fully Compiled!

  • The 5 Centimeters per Second manga was given a hardcover collector's edition as well this year. The previous edition released in 2012.

  • I made a mistake on this picture because the sequel to Initial D, MF Ghost, started publishing digitally in 2022, not 2023.

  • The Witch Hat Atelier spin-off, Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, started releasing this year. I expect this and the main series to become a massive bestseller for Kodansha once the anime finally releases, assuming that the anime is handled well.

Kodansha USA's 2023 "Boy's Love" and "Girl's Love" (Yuri) New Releases

Kodansha USA's 2023 Non- or Unknown-Demographic New Releases

  • The first four novels on this picture are part of a series called "Maiden's Bookshelf." The Girl Who Became a Fish was a novel by famous author Osamu Dazai, and is described by Kodansha as an "early classic from the author of Japan’s greatest modern novel. A dark, elliptical tale of hopelessness that weaves the folklore of the mountains into an anti-coming-of-age story as vividly relevant today as it was when it was written nearly a hundred years ago." The Surgery Room was originally released in 1895 by Kyoka Izumi. This edition includes illustrations by Towoji Honojiro, who worked on Touken Ranbu. The Moon Over the Mountain is by Atsushi Nakajima with artwork by Nekosuke. All three of these authors also exist as characters in the Bungo Stray Dogs universe, which is likely another reason Yen Press decided to release them.

  • Hell in a Bottle by Kyusaku Yumeno (also part of the Maiden's Bookshelf series and represented in Bungo Stray Dogs) actually released in November 2022 instead of 2023. My mistake.

  • I forgot to include the release of Spring Comes Riding in a Carriage by Riichi Yokomitsu, a Maiden's Bookshelf volume that drops this month.
